Taste the Best BBQ and Chili in Southwest Florida! Come to the Venice Airport grounds this Saturday, April 16th, to get in on the feast. Gates open at 11:00…this is a BBQ competition with the best BBQers(Professional and Back Yard) gathered together for some friendly trash talkin’ and lip smackin’. The judging will take place at 4:00 and last year the BBQ was devoured by 3:30…rumour has it this can’t happen this year but I would still get there early! Be sure to visit LT Toole at Texolina BBQ, you won’t be dissapointed.

Shark’s Tooth Festival April 8-10

Come to the Venice Municipal Airport Festival Grounds for the 3 F’s…Fun, Food, and Fossils. There is plenty to do for everyone. Kids can enjoy the bounce houses and rides while the adults can take in the live music, food, and events. All can enjoy the many displays and assorted vendors on hand for this event. All proceeds benefit the Special Olympics of Sarasota and Venice.

Huntin’ Shark’s Teeth at Caspersen Beach

Welcome to Caspersen's Beach

Venice didn’t earn the designation as the Shark’s Tooth Capital of the World for nothin’. Located south of the Venice Airport on Harbor Drive, Caspersen Beachin one of the best places to find shark’s teeth. The kids love seeking these little treasures and building their collections. The first thing you need to do before gathering Teeth is of course to get the right tools. You need to get a sifter, preferably one with a long handle available at Babe’s Hardware on the Island or any number of the shops on Venice Avenue. Next you need a container to put all your findings and last but not least and maybe the most important, don’t forget the sunscreen. Oh yeah, pick up one of those shark’s teeth diagrams, it’s always kind of nice, not to mention educational, to know what kind of shark the teeth came from. Later if your a little older, you’ll need some ibuprofen for the neck discomfort from looking down for hours. Just a suggestion… If you haven’t found teeth at Caspersen’s after about 15 minutes, you’re doing somthing wrong, don’t know what teeth look like, or simply need your eyes examined by a professional.( See Doctor Fezza in Sarasota)

You’ll find Caspersen’s to be pristine and secluded. The southern two thirds of the beach is preserved in it’s natural state with fresswater and saltwater marshes, mangroves, and tidal flats. On many days at the south end of the beach you can look along the shoreline and see nothing but undisturbed shoreline for as far as the eye can see. You may even forget you’re anywhere near civilization.

Caspersen’s Beach also features a kayak launch, access to the Venetian Waterway Trail, a large playground, pavilions with BBQ, restrooms, and plenty of free parking.

Welcome to my blog about Venice, Florida. I moved to Venice from the Washington, D. C. area in 2001 and haven’t looked back. After years of driving 3 hours to Ocean City, Maryland to enjoy the beach, it didn’t take long to adjust to the minutes it took to get to the closest beach…walking.

Welcome to Venice Beach, and no, not the crazy one in California. Venice Beach, Florida is a reef diver’s delight. Reef diver’s love it because the reef is only about a quarter-mile offshore and is a great place to find sharks teeth..oh yeah, did I mention Venice is the “Shark’s Tooth Capital” of the world….That’s a story for another day. Venice Beach has everything you could want in a beach, …white sand, warm turquoise water, volleyball nets, lifeguards, covered pavilion, and of course the all important public restrooms. Located only a pleasant walk from Historic Downtown Venice giving you options if you need a break from the fun in the sun. Downtown offers plenty of little shops and places to grab a bite.
